Do I Need an Alignment or Suspension Repair?

Your steering wheel is crooked. The car drifts. One tire is wearing faster than the others.
Time for an alignment? Maybe. But if something underneath is loose, worn or damaged, adjusting the alignment won’t repair that part.
At Gearhead Autoworks in Maize, we start by finding out why the vehicle isn’t driving correctly. Sometimes it needs an alignment. Sometimes it needs a repair first.
What does a wheel alignment actually fix?
A wheel alignment measures and adjusts the angles of the wheels according to the vehicle’s specifications. Those angles affect how the vehicle tracks down the road and how its tires wear.
Signs that make an alignment check worthwhile include:
- A steering wheel that sits crooked while driving straight.
- Pulling or drifting on a reasonably level road.
- Uneven tire wear.
- A change in handling after hitting a pothole or curb.
Those symptoms are clues—not a diagnosis. Tire pressure, tire condition and mechanical problems can create similar complaints.
Our wheel alignment service in Maize starts with checking whether the vehicle is in a condition that can be aligned correctly.
When does it need steering or suspension repair?
Clunking over bumps, loose steering and worn joints deserve attention before anyone starts turning alignment adjusters.
Tie rods, ball joints, control arms and bushings help locate and control the wheels. Excessive movement in those components can let the wheel angles change as the vehicle moves.
An alignment adjustment cannot tighten a worn ball joint or repair a damaged control arm.
We inspect the components involved, identify the source of the problem and explain what needs attention. If repairs are necessary, we discuss them with you before doing additional work.

Will an alignment fix a shaking steering wheel?
Not necessarily.
A shake that appears at certain road speeds may involve tire balance, tire damage or a wheel problem. Shaking that happens during braking calls for a different inspection.
Tell us when it happens: at highway speed, while braking, over bumps or during turns. That information helps us narrow down the cause.
Booking an alignment simply because the steering wheel shakes can mean paying for a service that doesn’t address the complaint.
Do I need an alignment after suspension repairs?
Many steering and suspension repairs can change wheel alignment. After replacing components that affect those angles, the alignment should be checked and adjusted as needed.
The order matters: repair the worn or damaged components, then set the alignment.
An alignment also won’t put worn rubber back on a tire. If uneven wear has already damaged the tires, we’ll explain their condition alongside the alignment findings.
