Drivetrain & 4x4 Repair in Wichita & Maize, KS
Power Has to Make It to the Ground.
Your engine can run perfectly and your transmission can shift properly, but the vehicle still relies on the rest of the drivetrain to transfer that power to the wheels.
If you're hearing a clunk, feeling a vibration, finding a fluid leak, or dealing with a 4WD/AWD system that isn't working correctly, Gearhead Autoworks can diagnose where the problem is coming from and determine what actually needs repaired.
Something Between the Transmission and the Tires
Drivetrain problems can show up as noise, vibration, binding, leaks, warning messages, or changes in how the vehicle drives.
And because several components work together to move the vehicle, the source isn't always obvious from the driver's seat.
Depending on the vehicle and concern, we'll inspect the appropriate components and determine where the problem actually begins.
Find the source before replacing the parts.
4WD & AWD Problems
When Four-Wheel Drive Doesn't Do What You Asked
Modern 4WD and AWD systems can involve mechanical components, electronic controls, actuators, sensors, modules, and network communication.
Symptoms can include:
- 4WD won't engage
- 4WD won't disengage
- Service 4WD/AWD messages
- Binding or unusual behavior while turning
- Noise when 4WD is engaged
- Intermittent operation
- Warning lights or messages
We'll determine whether the concern is
mechanical, electrical, electronic—or a combination of them.
Transfer Case Service & Repair
Sending Power Where It Needs to Go
The transfer case distributes power through a four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive system.
Problems may involve fluid leaks, worn components, actuators, control systems, or the transfer case assembly itself.
Depending on the vehicle and failure, we can diagnose transfer-case concerns, service the fluid where applicable, repair related components, and replace failed assemblies when necessary.
A 4WD warning doesn't automatically mean the transfer case itself has failed.
CV Axles & Axle Shafts
Connecting the Drivetrain to the Wheels
CV axles and axle shafts transfer power while allowing the suspension and steering to move.
Common symptoms can include:
- Clicking while turning
- Vibration during acceleration
- Torn CV boots
- Grease around the wheel or suspension
- Clunking during acceleration or deceleration
- Failed or damaged axle shafts
We'll inspect the concern and determine whether the axle—or something around it—is actually responsible.
Differential Service & Diagnosis
Gears Need Lubrication Too
Differentials allow driven wheels to rotate at different speeds while still transferring power through the drivetrain.
Differential fluid deteriorates over time, and leaks can reduce the lubrication the assembly depends on.
We can handle differential fluid service, leak diagnosis, and diagnosis of differential-related noise or operating concerns, then recommend the appropriate repair based on what we find.
If the problem requires work outside the services we perform in-house,
we'll tell you that rather than pretending otherwise.
Clunks, Vibrations & Driveshaft Concerns
A Vibration Isn't Always a Tire
Driveline vibration can sometimes feel similar to a tire, wheel, or suspension problem.
Driveshafts, U-joints, CV joints, mounts, bearings, and other rotating drivetrain components can create vibration or noise that changes with vehicle speed, acceleration, deceleration, or load.
We'll work to isolate where the vibration or noise is coming from before recommending a repair.
Hubs, Actuators & 4WD Controls
Four-wheel-drive operation on many trucks and SUVs depends on more than the transfer case.
Depending on the system, hubs, axle actuators, vacuum components, switches, sensors, wiring, modules, or other controls may all play a role.
That means a vehicle that refuses to enter 4WD doesn't automatically need a major drivetrain component.
Test the system. Identify what's preventing operation. Repair the actual failure.
Drivetrain Fluids Matter
Transfer cases and differentials operate under substantial loads and depend on the correct lubricant.
When service is required, we use the appropriate fluid specification for the vehicle and application rather than treating every differential or transfer case the same.
If you're unsure whether your drivetrain fluids are due, we'll consider the vehicle, mileage, service history, condition, and manufacturer recommendations.
Noise Doesn't Tell You Which Part to Buy
A hum doesn't automatically mean a differential.
A vibration doesn't automatically mean a driveshaft.
A clicking noise doesn't automatically mean a CV axle.
And a 4WD warning doesn't automatically mean the transfer case has failed.
Several drivetrain, suspension, wheel, tire, and electronic problems can produce similar symptoms.
That's why we
diagnose the concern before deciding which component needs attention.
