Battery, Starting & Charging Repair in Wichita & Maize, KS

Turn the Key. Push the Button. Something Should Happen.

Slow crank, clicking, warning lights, a dead battery, or a vehicle that simply won't start can come from several different problems.

At Gearhead Autoworks, we test the starting and charging system to determine whether the problem is the battery, starter, alternator, wiring, connection—or something else entirely.

A Dead Battery Doesn't Always Mean a Bad Battery

A vehicle that needs a jump doesn't automatically need a battery.

A weak alternator may not be properly recharging it. A poor connection can prevent current from reaching the starter. An electrical draw can discharge a perfectly good battery while the vehicle sits.

We'll test the system before recommending parts.

Find out why it went dead—not just what went dead.

Battery Testing & Replacement

Is the Battery Actually Bad?

Batteries deteriorate with age, temperature extremes, repeated discharge, and normal use.

We can evaluate battery condition and determine whether it can still deliver the power the vehicle requires.

If replacement is necessary, we'll make sure the replacement battery meets the vehicle's requirements—including vehicles that require specific battery types or battery-management procedures.

Alternator & Charging System

Keeping the Battery Charged Is Only Part of the Job

The charging system supplies electrical power while the engine is running and replenishes energy used during starting.

Charging-system problems may cause:

  • Battery or charging warning lights
  • Repeated dead batteries
  • Dim or changing light output
  • Electrical accessories behaving strangely
  • Low or excessive charging voltage
  • A vehicle that dies after running
  • Starting problems after short trips

We test charging-system operation rather than replacing an alternator simply because the battery went dead.

Starter & No-Crank Problems

Click. Nothing. Or Absolutely Nothing.

A no-crank condition can involve the starter—but it can also involve the battery, cables, relays, switches, modules, security systems, wiring, or control signals.

That's why “it needs a starter” isn't a diagnosis.

We'll determine whether the starter is receiving what it needs to operate and identify where the starting process is failing.

Connections Matter

Electricity Needs a Clean Path

Corroded terminals, damaged cables, loose connections, poor grounds, and excessive resistance can create symptoms that look like a failed battery, starter, or alternator.

Testing the complete circuit helps prevent replacing an expensive component when the actual problem is somewhere between the component and the battery.

Sometimes the problem isn't the part. It's the path to the part.

Keeps Going Dead?

That's a Symptom Worth Diagnosing

If the battery repeatedly goes dead after the vehicle sits, replacing batteries may only temporarily hide the problem.

An unintended electrical draw can remain active after the vehicle is shut down and slowly discharge the battery.

Finding intermittent or parasitic electrical problems can require more than a quick battery test. When necessary, we approach those concerns as an electrical diagnostic problem and work toward the source.

Diagnostics & Electrical.

Modern Vehicles Make This More Complicated

Today's vehicles may use intelligent charging systems, battery monitoring sensors, stop/start systems, multiple batteries, electronically controlled alternators, and modules that manage electrical loads.

That means a voltage reading by itself doesn't always tell the whole story.

We use system testing and scan data when appropriate to understand what the vehicle is commanding and what the electrical system is actually doing.
