SPARK PLUG & IGNITION SERVICE IN MAIZE, KS
A Good Spark Has a Pretty Important Job
Every time a gasoline engine runs, its ignition system has to create a strong, correctly timed spark thousands of times per minute.
Spark plugs wear. Ignition coils can fail. Boots can deteriorate. And when something in the system isn't doing its job, you may notice anything from a rough idle to a flashing check-engine light.
Gearhead Autoworks provides spark plug replacement and ignition-system repair for drivers in Maize, Wichita, and surrounding communities.
SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT
Small Parts. Pretty Important Job.
Spark plugs live directly in the combustion chamber and fire every time the engine needs to ignite the air-fuel mixture.
Over time, electrode wear and deposits can increase the voltage required to produce a reliable spark. Eventually that can contribute to misfires, poor performance, difficult starting, or additional stress on ignition components.
Spark-plug replacement intervals vary significantly between vehicles and plug designs.
We'll use the appropriate service information for your vehicle rather than treating every engine like it needs plugs at the same mileage.
SIGNS OF IGNITION TROUBLE
Something Isn't Firing Like It Should
Possible symptoms include:
- Rough idle
- Engine misfires
- Hesitation under acceleration
- Loss of power
- Check-engine light
- Flashing check-engine light
- Difficult starting
- Poor fuel economy
Those symptoms can point toward an ignition problem.
They
don't prove one.
IGNITION COILS
A Misfire Doesn't Automatically Mean “Needs a Coil”
Modern gasoline engines commonly use individual ignition coils to provide the voltage needed to fire each spark plug.
Coils can fail—but so can spark plugs, wiring, connectors and plenty of things that have absolutely nothing to do with the ignition system.
If there's an active problem, we'll determine what failed before turning the estimate into a shopping list
MISFIRE DOESN'T MEAN SPARK PLUG
The Code Tells Us Where. Not Necessarily Why.
A misfire code identifies where the engine detected a problem, but it doesn’t necessarily tell us what caused it. If your vehicle is actively misfiring and the cause isn’t known, we’ll diagnose the problem before recommending parts.

WHEN DO SPARK PLUGS NEED REPLACEMENT?
Follow the Vehicle, Not a Generic Number
Spark-plug replacement intervals vary widely depending on the vehicle, engine and type of spark plug installed.
Some are scheduled considerably earlier than others.
We'll look at the manufacturer's maintenance information, vehicle mileage and service history to determine whether yours are actually due.
If they're due, we'll tell you.
If they're not, we're not interested in replacing perfectly serviceable plugs just to check a box.
WHY THE RIGHT SPARK PLUG MATTERS
This Isn't the Place to Grab Whatever Fits
Spark plugs are designed around specific heat ranges, electrode designs, gaps and engine requirements.
The wrong plug—or even the wrong version of the “right” plug—can affect performance and service life.
We use the correct specification for the application and install them according to the requirements of the engine.
Simple part.
Still worth doing correctly.
Catch Problems While They're Small
Maintenance Can Tell a Story
An oil change can reveal more than old oil.
A developing coolant leak, uneven tire wear, deteriorated belt, leaking component, or abnormal fluid condition may be visible before it becomes something you notice from the driver's seat.
If we see something worth your attention, we'll show you what we found and explain how urgent—or not urgent—it actually is.
That's the difference between recommending maintenance and simply selling services.
Already Having a Problem?
Maintenance and Repair Aren't the Same Thing
Maintenance is intended to help prevent problems. It isn't a substitute for diagnosis when something is already wrong.
If your vehicle has a warning light, strange noise, leak, overheating problem, drivability concern, or electrical issue, we'll approach it as a diagnostic problem rather than trying maintenance services and hoping the symptom disappears.
Find the cause first. Then fix what actually needs fixed.
OIL IN THE SPARK PLUG WELL?
Sometimes the Ignition Problem Started Somewhere Else
When spark plugs and ignition coils are removed, other problems sometimes become visible.
Oil inside a spark-plug well, damaged coil boots, corrosion, loose connectors or other conditions can contribute to ignition problems.
If we find something that changes the repair, we'll show you what we found and explain the options before adding anything to the job.
