Why Does My Car Pull to One Side?

Your steering wheel shouldn’t feel like it’s arguing with you.
If you’re constantly correcting left or right to keep your vehicle traveling straight, something deserves attention. An alignment may be part of the answer, but tires, brakes, and worn steering or suspension components can also affect how your vehicle tracks.
At Gearhead Autoworks in Maize, our approach is straightforward: find what’s causing the symptom before recommending the repair.
Is It an Alignment Problem?
Wheel alignment affects the angles at which your tires meet the road. When those angles are outside the appropriate specifications, you may notice pulling, an off-center steering wheel, or uneven tire wear.
If the problem started after hitting a pothole or curb, mention that when scheduling. That history helps guide the inspection.
Our wheel alignment service uses Hunter Hawkeye Elite equipment to measure alignment angles accurately. But accurate measurements are only part of the job—the condition of the tires and components matters, too.
Your Tires Could Be Causing the Pull
Unequal tire pressures, uneven wear, or a problem within a tire can affect the way your vehicle tracks. A vehicle can even pull when its alignment measurements are within specifications.
Start by checking cold tire pressures against the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, usually found on the driver’s door placard. The maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall is not your vehicle’s recommended setting.
If the pull appeared after a tire rotation or replacement, tell us. That’s useful diagnostic information.
Our tire services address tire condition and fitment alongside the symptoms you’re experiencing.
Does It Pull When You Apply the Brakes?
A pull that appears or becomes stronger during braking deserves a brake-system inspection.
A sticking caliper, restricted brake hose, or other issue that creates uneven braking can change the vehicle’s direction when you press the pedal. An alignment adjustment won’t correct a brake that isn’t operating properly.
Tell us whether the pull happens while cruising, braking, or both. We can use that information to guide the brake inspection and repair process.
Worn Parts Can Affect How It Handles
Steering and suspension components help maintain wheel position while your vehicle moves. Excessive play or damaged components can make handling inconsistent and may need correction before an alignment.
If the pull comes with clunking, wandering, or a steering wheel that feels loose, mention those symptoms together. They may help explain the bigger picture.
When Should You Stop Driving?
A sudden or severe pull, difficulty maintaining control, reduced braking, smoke, or a burning smell calls for immediate attention. Pull over somewhere safe and arrange assistance rather than continuing to test the vehicle.
For a persistent mild pull, schedule an inspection before it becomes something you simply compensate for every day.
